Regalia

This event starts
Thu November 5th, 2009 @ 5:00 PM

Art Central and the Alberta College of Art + Design present Regalia: The much anticipated annual wearable art show from instructor Dee Fontans and the students of the Wearable Art - Object and Body class.

Artists and designers have long been exploring imagery, fashion and language through wearable art. They have often been influenced by fashion and the garment industry. This form of artistic expression gives the individual the opportunity to investigate a multidisciplinary practice. Wearable art is a statement which blurs creative boundaries. The artist explores concepts, material and performance. Both fashion and fine art can be addressed in the context of the body.

Artist bio
Instructor and Artist, Dee Fontans

Creativity is the solving of problems. It’s taking exciting material and putting it together in different ways. Believing nothing happens in isolation,  I am concerned with interrelationships of meaning and detail. I express myself through the creation of objects which embellish and celebrate the body. The body is my influence, inspiration and motivation.

Nick Ward

"I draw influence from the way I imagine life after the downfall of
civilization as well as real-life occult practices. I exhibit this through the use
of materials that have experienced life."

Nick has always considered himself to be a student of life. He views his
experiences at the Albert College of Art + Design as another step towards complete personal artistic freedom.

Sara Girletz

"My love is vintage, fashions fused with couture. The inspiration is the ever classic little black dress. These designs will take the idea of the little black dress out of the ordinary."

One thing that she's learned, is that no matter how enthused she is by the city, her heart will always belong to her prairie hometown. That is what inspires Sara.

Lindsay hails from Golden, British Columbia, and is a third year fibre major at the Alberta College of Art + Design.  She revels in quirk, kitsch and humor, while experimenting with various media.

A businessman wearing an atypical accessory is an intriguing concept. Nontraditional ruffled collars of polyester felt are a reference to the Elizabethan times.  The juxtaposition of glamour, antiquity and modern materials create a visual tension.

Brittney Reum

Brittney was born in a small town in British Columbia. She attended two universities before transferring to ACAD. She is currently in her second year at ACAD with a focus in fibre and the wearable.

performance incorporating sculpture and wearable art. Her work speaks to the

Extensions of Self: An Examination of Auras and Egos:

Pulled from the body, lines outreached.  Striations extended outward pushing attention inward. Allure circulates through the work like a wave of energy.  It demands attention. And when worn it owns the room.
