The New Gallery (TNG) - Calgary's original artist-run centre: "What We Take With Us"  by Valerie LeBlanc & Daniel Dugas (Moncton, NB). Opening Reccption Thursday January 5, from 5 to 9pm, show runs through Saturday February 4, 2012

What We Take with Us is a two-channel video installation. Each artist independently created a program of short videos that are then shown projected side by side; as the running time of each program differs, the juxtaposition of visuals changes constantly as the loops progress. The project began as an exploration of the experience of travel and displacement, by examining the concept of home and what that means to various individuals. It was originally developed during a research residency at the Sydney College for the Arts in Sydney, Australia in September/October 2009. The research began with the artists’ own personal explorations and interviews with others, as they looked for indications of what it is like to live in a place and to call it home - and also at the shifts evoked by the experience of physically repositioning oneself in the world.

Pluridisciplinary artist and writer, Valerie LeBlanc has lived and worked in many regions of Canada. She has presented, and participated in residencies, and workshops – throughout Canada, the United States, France and Australia. She graduated from the Glass Department of the Alberta College of Art + Design, 1984 and received her MFA, Time Arts Program, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, IL in 1993. Her practice fluxes between media arts, performance and installation. Many of her videopoems, emphasize the importance of non-spectacular time, the significance of the day-to-day, and the beauty present in available aesthetic.  She describes herself as an existentialist with a conscious.

Daniel Dugas is a poet, musician and videographer. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions as well as festivals and literary events in North America, Europe, Mexico and Australia. His seventh book of poetry: Au large des objets perdus has just been published by Les Éditions Prise de parole.
