Interiors in Balance specializes in Benjarong, a traditional form of Thai porcelain. The style of multicoloured enamels on a white porcelain base came from Ming dynasty China. The name Benjarong was derived from Pali and Sanscrit words Benja and Rong, meaning literally ‘five colours’. ‘Five colours’ in reality transform into many colours, as the hand-painted pieces are usually decorated in three, five, eight or more colours.
Benjarong can easily be recognized by distinctive design features: densely painted and detailed; unparalleled dazzling effect created by the use of gold; the variety of patterns takes origin in traditional Thai motifs, such as flowers and flame, Buddhism.
For centuries the making of Benjarong was exclusively reserved for the Royal Court.
Many years of apprenticeship were required of the most gifted artists to be able to produce a piece worthy of the King. And now Benjarong has made its way to Canada…
